Author’s Instructions

Authors, who wish to submit a manuscript, have to familiarize themselves with the information under «About the Journal» (below) and the Author’s Instructions (here). Manuscripts are submitted electronically through ELLA’s electronic portal (link is here).

The journal accepts only anonymised and language edited manuscripts that are not being considered by other journals or publication channels. The instructions for how to ensure the script in anonymised, can be found below.

Articles

Scope: up to 40,000 characters without spaces. Summaries, reference lists and attachments are in addition. Page size A4, margins 2,5 cm.

Language: Scandinavian languages (Norwegian, Sweden, Danish) or English. Upon submission, you will be given the opportunity to choose only between English and Norwegian Bokmål. This is a limitation that exists with the publication system itself. Authors, who write in Nynorsk, Swedish or Danish, must therefore select «Norwegian Bokmål».

With regard to universal design/formatting, it is important that the correct language is used in the document. This means that if you use an English quote in an otherwise Bokmål text, the quote must be highlighted, and the language is set to English.

Reference System: A 7th.

For references with page numbers within the text, we want the start and end page listed (e.g. (p.141-144) and not (p.141ff)). When the reference has two authors, we would like you to use "&", not "and", and all references with three or more authors should be cited with "et al." If the authors' names are written outside the parentheses, use "et al." with a period, if the authors' names are inside the parentheses, use "et al." with a period and comma.

Font and line spacing: Main text: Times New Roman, 12 point font, one and a half spacing. Footnotes and indented quotes (see below): Times New Roman, 11 point font, single line spacing. In the main texts (captions) for tables, figures and pictures as well as in footnotes, the font type Arial, 10 point, is used. This font type will also be a good choice within tables and figures.

Headings: It is important to use the correct heading level in order for the article to be read in the correct order by a screen reader. ELLA has a Word template where the different headline levels can be entered. Contact the editorial secretary to have the template sent to you. Do not enter the headings manually by changing the font size, as this may disrupt the reading order if you use a screen reader.

Paragraphs: Mark paragraphs with page breaks, not indents. Avoid using the enter button to create paragraphs, as this will be read by screen readers. Use the line and paragraph spacing buttons.

Margins: Use normal layout with 2.5 cm on all edges, we use left-aligned margins.

Quotes/Quotations, Quotation marks: Double quotation marks or double angles «that look like this». Quotes within quotes are marked with single quotation marks: "Who said 'The die is cast'?". Please note that single quotation marks are used to emphasize certain concepts in the text but should be used sparingly.

Quotes of four lines or more are marked by indentation, block text, single line spacing and 11 point font, block text. These are written without quotation marks. In order to highlight a quote within a quote, single quotation marks are used. Omissions in a quote are highlighted with […]. […] and is used only within a quote, not at the beginning or the end of the quote. Quotes are written in the original language. Translations to Norwegian/Scandinavian/English in footnote are noted with a remark as to whether it was the author’s own translation, «translated by the author», or if it originated from an already published translation.

Italics: When highlighting in a text, italics should be the only form used for it, with the exception of clickable URLs, which are automatically underlined. Underlining is otherwise not used. Book titles, film titles, titles of artwork are italicized in the running text.

Footnotes: Use Times New Roman, size 10, single line spacing. All footnotes should end with a period. For good formatting, it is recommended that footnotes are avoided for the purpose of readability and screen readers. Authors can exercise discretion here but consider whether the information can be presented in a different way than in a footnote.

llustrations: Right-click on the image and select "break text" and "align with text" to ensure that alternative text can be read in the correct order by the screen readers. Illustrations with meaningful content should have an alternative text, other illustrations can be marked as decorative. If the image is described in running text, the alternative text can be listed as "the image is described above/below". Alternative text should be as short and precise as possible, do not start with "image of" but go straight to the content of the image, and end with, for example, "illustration".

Diagrams: Make sure you have sufficient color contrast between the text and the background, and bars and background. Charts should have alternative text in the same way as images are identified, and the text should provide similar information as the chart.

Document properties: Enter the title, author, and other relevant information under document properties. This is important for indexing and searchability such as in Google, for example. On Mac, you do this by clicking on "File" and "Properties", and on Windows by clicking on "File", "Info" and "Edit" (far right).

Biography: The bibliography is included at the end of the article. All sources mentioned in the contribution must be listed alphabetically. If there are several sources by the same author, these are sorted chronologically. If an author has published several texts in the same year, these are sorted alphabetically and marked with letters (e.g. 2009a, 2009b).

Use paragraphs between each source and hanging paragraph type to allow for indentation. DOI on a separate line without a full stop at the end. Use https://apps.crossref.org/SimpleTextQuery to check whether the sources have a DOI.

Pagination: Centered where you can see which page you are on out of the total number of pages. Follow word template.

Keywords: Choose 6-8 keywords that are central to your article. These are important for indexing, so choose some short and descriptive terms that will make your article appear in relevant searches.

Abstract: All articles must have an abstract in Norwegian and English. Also remember the English title.

The manuscript file should be as complete as possible. This means that images, figures, tables, notes, and the reference list should be included in the manuscript file and presented in the way that the author wishes them to appear. When using additional tools for producing literature references, reference lists, or tables and figures (such as EndNote or Excel), the elements that are inserted should be made as simple and stable as possible. The title, abstract and keywords (but not the author's name) must be included in the manuscript file, although these are delivered on a separate cover page (see below).

Front page with Title, Summary, Key Words and Author Review

A non-anonymized cover page is submitted together with the anonymized manuscript. The front page must contain the title of the article, a summary of a maximum of 250 words, three to six keywords and a statement of no more than 50 words. Title, abstractand keywords must be available in English and a Scandinavian language. The author review is written in the language that the article was written.

The summary should be structured such that it answers the questions under the headings below. NB: These headings should not be used in the summary, which should be in a continuous text:

  • Intoduction What have you researched or developed – and why? (topic, background, issue)
  • Material and methods What kind of material/data did you use in your work, and which methods did you use?
  • Result What was the main result of your work?
  • Discussion and conclusion What does the result of your work mean, and how do these results relate to other relevant research?

The author review should include name, position (with field of study), institution and country, as well as one to two sentences about research interests. The review should conclude with full contact information, i.e. postal address of the institution where the author works and the author’s email address.

If relevant, can the front page also contain information about possible conflicts of interest, any approvals from the research ethics committee(s), and a brief thank you to people who have been helpful with the article.

The front page is uploaded as an additional file when submitting manuscripts online.

The review is expected to be linked to relevant theory and research. There should also be a picture of the book or learning resource in question. The scope of book reviews should be under 8,000 characters without spaces, including a list of references.

The following should be included in the beginning of the review:

  • Author(s)
  • Title
  • Release year
  • Publisher
