Abstract

This article explores the concept of the "geopolitics of Francophonie," examining its current relevance and potential. The first section clarifies key terms such as "geopolitics," "francophonie," and "Francophonie," and their interrelationships. It then traces the historical development of Francophonie, from its emergence and gradual formalization in the 1950s-1970s to its institutionalization in the 1990s-2000s. The paper discusses the initial enthusiasm and subsequent disillusionment regarding Francophonie's ability to become a geopolitical actor. In conclusion, the article considers whether current global trends towards fragmentation or unification might grant Francophonie a genuine geopolitical role or lead to its dissolution. The analysis emphasizes the unique interaction between cultural, demographic, linguistic and political dimensions in the French-speaking world and highlights the challenges of maintaining its influence in the context of globalization, the end of Western domination and the persistence of great diversity within it.
